After a whirlwind year accumulating in being awarded a £812,000 Big Lottery grant along with the EMS Ltd family expanding (Becky Norman is currently on maternity after giving birth to a boy in May).

She said: “The last three years seem to have gone by in the blink of an eye and I would like to thank the staff and Trustees of the company for all their hard work.”

“All of our endeavours came to fruition in August with the Big Lottery notification but I am well aware that with just that one phone conversation even more hard work was just around the corner. We all relish the challenge and look forward to working with our partners, Probe (Hull) Ltd, PRNDC, East Hull Community Farm, Hull College and Hull City Council on the launch of the Green Prosperity Project in January 2013.”

However Jan and her team can’t rest on their laurels as a number of projects are still being delivered by EMS Ltd throughout Hull, including Neighbourhood Management in Southcoates East and the Bricknell Community allotment.

On a final note Jan said; “It’s been a bumper 2012 so we hope to make 2013 even better, watch this space for additional environmental activities and projects.”

PARK AREA CELEBRATES ANOTHER FINE CROP OF GARDENING TALENT

Keen gardeners in the East Hull Ward of Park are celebrating another fantastic flower flourishing year both in the local Park competition and Hull in Bloom 2012 despite the poor summer weather.

Park had 31 “Bloomers” enter for the 2012 competition and an awards night hosted by local charity Environmental & Management Solutions (EMS) Ltd who run the competition at the Freedom Centre which was this year sponsored by Park Area Ward Councillors, on Wednesday 12 October.

John Parkes from Springdale Close won in Park Area and came second Hull in Bloom for his front garden award, whilst pupils and staff at Gillshill Primary School once again picked up area and city titles in the school category, with Marfleet Primary coming third.

Other success stories at Hull in Bloom include Margaret Cundill who came third for her back garden. With 8 other Park contestants receiving Highly Commended certificates.

Jan Boyd Chief Executive of EMS Ltd said “We had a great night and residents received certificates and medals in a number of categories.”

“We’ve become very proud of our devout gardeners but I’m particularly thrilled for Dennis Shaw and Denis Appleby winning the Hull prize in their categories for the third year running. We’re the best–supported In Bloom area in the city but I’d love to see more people and businesses becoming involved in the 2013 contest and make it an even better year.”

EAST HULL PARTERSHIP CELEBRATES £800,000 LOTTERY WIN!

Environmental and Management Solutions (EMS) Ltd and partners are delighted to have been awarded over £800,000 from The Big Lottery’s Communities Living Sustainably Programme – one of only 12 awards nationally.

EMS Ltd in partnership with lead delivery organisations Preston Road NDC Ltd, Probe (Hull) Ltd and the local community have developed a winning proposal designed to help local people live more sustainably, by reducing their fuel costs and overall carbon footprint

The project entitled Green Prosperity will be run over a three-year period covering the Longhill and Southcoates East wards.

Green Prosperity will have a number of strands which include

Energy & Waste Reduction – Information surveys, one to one support and practical solutions to reduce fuel poverty, domestic energy costs and the production of waste.

Green Enterprise – Grass roots support for local people to create new green enterprises.

Food – In association with East Hull Community Farm to give practical support and advice to residents in growing their own produce and the development of a range of skills relating to sustainable lifestyles.

Jan Boyd, Chief Executive of EMS Ltd said “We are delighted that Big Lottery has agreed to fund our proposal. We now have three years to really make a difference to the lives of residents living within the Longhill and Southcoates East wards.

Geoff Groom, Chief Executive of PRNDC Ltd said “This is marvellous news I am sure our project will go a long way to help residents cope with rising food and energy costs, rest assured we are fully committed to working with the community to bring about obvious change.”

Steve Alltoft, Managing Director of Probe Ltd reiterated the above by saying. “This is an exciting an innovative approach to improving the prosperity and well-being of the local communities and our partnership welcomes the opportunity to work with local people to achieve real change.”

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES MAKE HULL RESIDENTS GO GREEN

A wide ranging environmental scheme launches in Hull today that includes plans for local residents to keep chickens and bees to help fight the impact of soaring food prices.

The Green Prosperity project has today received £812,956 from the Big Lottery Fund to help over 20,000 residents of Southcoates East and Longhill to tackle rising food and energy bills. As well as people producing their own eggs and honey, the funding will be used for a number of other exciting elements including the building of a demonstration Eco house, fitted out by local people, to showcase a variety of energy saving measures.

A waste reduction scheme will help families cut costs through home information visits and has set the target of a five per cent reduction in the levels of domestic waste in the project area.

Jan Boyd, Chief Executive of Environmental and Management Solutions which will be delivering the Green Prosperity project, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to work with local residents and partners to develop a range of projects bringing communities together to tackle inequalities.

“The Big Lottery Funding will make a huge difference and we aim to make every penny count in inspiring residents and supporting them to become sustainable.”

A total of 12 projects across England have today received up to £1million each from the Big Lottery Fund’s Communities Living Sustainably initiative which is focused on inspiring people to reap financial, environmental and health gains by adapting the way they live, work, and connect together.

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “This project will help to make green and sustainable living like second nature for communities across Yorkshire and the Humber and go a long way towards helping people reduce their food and fuel costs.”

“With adverse weather affecting crops globally – which is likely to cause an increase in food prices in UK supermarkets*- and with fuel bills predicted to rise this winter, now is the time to encourage people to take small steps towards sustainable living at a local level which will help people cope with these added pressures during the recession.”

Supporting the groups each step of the way will be a partnership, led by Groundwork UK and including BRE, Federation of City Farms, Energy Savings Trust and nef. It will offer advice and guidance and also establish a learning support network to capture and share learning with other communities and inform the future development of investments of BIG’s Sustainable and Resilient Communities strategy. (www.communitieslivingsustainably.org.uk)

Communities Living Sustainably is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s £50m Sustainable and Resilient Communities strategy, which aims to encourage behaviour change among individuals and communities so they can cope better with the environmental, economic and social impacts of a changing climate. Vulnerable people, including those on low-incomes or older people, are less likely to cope with the negative effects of climate change such as floods, heat waves or severe cold weather.

PARK AREA IN BLOOM LAUNCH 2012

The East Hull based charity EMS Yorkshire is putting out a call to residents to start planting up for Park Area in Bloom 2012. EMS is running the competition conjunction with Hull City Council’s Park Area Team. Park Area in Bloom is open to residents, businesses, community groups and schools and is part of the overall citywide environmental challenge, Hull in Bloom.

Retired Dennis Appleby, 66, of Uxbridge Grove can boast probably one of the biggest hanging baskets anywhere. His one-metre diameter construction in the front garden was specially made by a welder friend, but only one of a multiple hanging baskets to adorn his property last summer. Denis hopes to continue to carry on the tradition of giving his spare plants, to Oldfleet Primary School, and making additional hanging baskets to give away to neighbours.

He says: “I love gardening and have around a dozen water features, as well as bizarre artefacts such as sewing machines and old fire surrounds to put containers on. I missed the judges last year as I had popped out when they turned up. So I plan to stay in all day this year so I don’t miss them. I want to show them all the different characteristics of my garden and switch on all the water features and lights even though they judge during the day!”

The categories are:

Best Displays by a public house, commercial organisation, community group, or school;

Best Front, Back or Full Garden; and Allotment Garden;

Best Planted Container or Hanging Basket;

Best Contribution to Wildlife;

Best Allotment.

The closing date is Friday 6 July and judging will take place the following week, with an awards ceremony at the Freedom Centre, Preston Road Village Centre, on 10 October. Park Area winners will also go forward to the citywide Hull in Bloom competition and the winners of this are announced during September in a ceremony at the Guildhall.

EMS Chief Executive Jan Boyd says: “I was overwhelmed with the variety of entries received in 2011 and I am really looking forward to judging this year. It is very clear to me that the residents who enter are extremely dedicated and love their gardens. I find they are their own hardest critics despite what we say to the contrary and I admire their enthusiasm greatly.”

“The Park Area did really well in the Citywide Hull in Bloom Awards with five overall winners covering, hanging baskets, back garden, front garden, OAP garden and school. Since we started running the competition in 2004 we have had over 100 gardens entered and with record 34 entries in 2011 I hope we get even more this year.”
